OVERVIEW

The GRIP (Governor to Reduce Idle and Pollution) Idle Management System has been created to manage the time that a vehicle spends running in idle. The system is automated, the operator does not need to turn on or engage the system. Once the vehicle is in park or neutral and all system safety interlocks are in place, the system will automatically shut the engine off, keeping the ignition in the run position. The GRIP system works in conjunction with the vehicle’s CAN (Controller Area Network). It receives real time data on the vehicle’s functions including engine revolutions, transmission position, outside temperature, ignition positions and coolant temperature, to name a few. Other data required by the GRIP system is received through sensors added when the system is installed in the vehicle. The controller of the system then makes decisions based on the information it receives allowing it to start and stop the engine of the vehicle as required. Since the GRIP system monitors batteries and auxiliary optional equipment, it allows the operator to perform all tasks as usual and keeps the vehicle operating experience practically the same. The only difference being that the vehicle will be shut down for unnecessary idle without compromising the operator’s ability to do their job, their comfort or their safety.

SAFETY FEATURES

  1. The system will only function when the vehicle is in Park or Neutral and is not moving. The system must keep communication with the vehicle CAN network in order to function, otherwise the vehicle stays operating as normal.
  2. The Operator Screen will only illuminate when the vehicle is in Park or Neutral for distraction free driving.
  3. If the hood is opened for service, the GRIP system will not start the engine automatically. The engine can still be started or shut down with the key manually but all auto functions are disabled.
  4. When the GRIP system is in operation and the engine shuts down, the system controls the key position back to the “RUN” position so that the airbags, windshield wipers, lights, and climate control systems are all still functioning.
  5. While the GRIP system is in operation, the system provides an accessory power signal to additional equipment so lights, sirens, and radios all stay operational while the engine is turned off.
  6. The system has an alarm signal that can be used to provide a warning light, horn, or audible alarm for surrounding operators and workers to warn when the engine is about to start or shut down.
  7. On vehicles with manual transmissions, the system will monitor the neutral switch and only allow the engine to start while the transmission is in neutral. As some manufactures allow their vehicles to start while the transmission is in gear. This will improve the safety of all vehicle.

FUNCTIONALITY

  1. Settings and Options: The GRIP system has many features and functions that can be used for nearly every application. All these features and functions can be setup for each vehicle application by using the GRIP Service Tool.
  2. Climate Monitoring: The system is designed to monitor the temperature of the vehicle cab and provide heating or cooling by either starting the engine or using devices such as coolant pumps, fuel fired heaters, or DC air conditioning systems to run while the vehicle engine is off.
  3. The Climate Controls can be completely controlled on light duty vehicle platforms to provide the best savings, the reduction of energy consumption, as well as the best performance for personal comfort by utilizing the optional Automatic Climate Control Kit.
  4. Battery Monitoring: Typically, it is necessary to add additional batteries to provide the required power to operate all the additional equipment that is added to the vehicle and to operate the vehicle itself. The system monitors all batteries on the vehicle and starts the engine as necessary to keep the batteries at a ready state of charge.
  5. If the optional Current Sensor is used, the system will monitor the current returning to the batteries so the engine only runs long enough to replenish the batteries.
  6. The Current Sensor can also be used to monitor a high load, such as a Power Inverter. The system will keep the engine running as long as that load exists instead of starting and stopping the vehicle frequently.
  7. The system will monitor the vehicle battery condition, such as when the battery drops in voltage when the engine is turned off, signaling a poor battery condition.
  8. On vehicles with air brakes, the system will monitor the air pressure and start the engine to increase the air supply in order to keep the pressure at an optimal condition.
  9. Operator Control: The operator can have as little or as much control of the system as they choose. These settings can be adjusted using the Service Tool upon setup after installation.
  10. 10.The Operator Screen brightness level can be controlled by the operator when the screen is on. Some vehicles, the auto dimming feature will control the brightness of the screen based on the brightness on the vehicle’s instrument panel.
  11. Configurable I/O: There are several inputs and outputs on the controller that can be utilized to add additional functions to the system. Using the Service Tool, you can program the GRIP controller to manage these additional functions.
  12. The system has the ability for a Safe Mode option that allows wider parameters to be set in order maintain a vehicle in a stand by situation. Certain parameters can be disabled during this mode as they are not required to be monitored. This will keep the vehicle ready to respond when operators are not required in the vehicle for long periods.
  13. If shore power is installed, the system can monitor the shore power connection and indicate when connected on the operator screen. The System will prevent the vehicle’s engine from starting when the cord is attached.
  14. 14.The system will prevent the engine from shutting down when PTO is in use.
  15. The system can control high idle when equipped on vehicle. By raising the rpm level, climate and battery levels are restored in a shorter period.
  16. On bucket trucks, the start/stop function of the bucket can be controlled.
  17. The system can monitor the coolant temperate and start the engine for low coolant temperature to maintain engine temperature as well continue to run the engine if the coolant temperature is not at an optimal temperature upon start up.
  18. The system can control a fuel operated heater manually or by using one of two schedulers in order to heat the cab, fuel, and hydraulics for winter operation. This will  reduce hydraulic pump failures and improve personnel efficiency by getting  to the job faster. 
  19. The system has the ability to control a fuel fired Air Heater to heat the cab as well as a coolant heater to maintain the engine.

SECURITY FEATURES

  1. The Anti-Theft Feature allows the operator to leave the vehicle secured by pressing a button either on the GRIP Operator Screen or by using the keypad from the lighting system and removing the keys. The operator can then proceed to lock the vehicle using the vehicle’s key or key fob.  The system will continue to monitor the vehicle for battery and climate while the operator is away from the vehicle. When the operator returns, they simply place the key in the ignition, turn to “Run” or “Start” depending on whether the engine is running, and go. On vehicles with just a standard key, this feature is included with the kit, otherwise additional hardware may be required.

DATA CAPABILITIES

  1. The system collects information accumulatively over the life of the vehicle. From the time of the installation, it records the usage or “Life” of the vehicle every time the key is turned to the “Run” position.
  2. Records the overall Vehicle Operations such as how much time the vehicle has been driving, static in Park and Neutral or how much time the engine has been off in Monitoring mode with no requirement for climate or battery.
  3. Records the time that additional equipment such as a coolant pump, fuel fired heater or DC air conditioning operates while the vehicle engine is off.
  4. Records the time that the engine has been idling for any reason whether it’s for climate, low battery or any of the safety starting features such as door start or humidity.
  5. Records possible override conditions such as; brake pedal held while the vehicle is in drive, or the park brake engaged while the vehicle is in drive.
  6. Records the process counts such as how many times the engine has been started for door open or seat belt.
  7. Records the time that PTO has been engaged to compare how much of the operation was actually in PTO mode vs stand by and driving.
  8. It records the fuel consumption data. Providing the overall average of fuel consumed during the vehicle operation at idle for real fuel consumption data straight from the vehicle.
  9. By using our Data Analysis Tool, you can take that data and turn it into realized savings information and emissions reduction.  You can use that data to determine what additional equipment or change in behavior is required to achieve better results.

INSTALLATION

The GRIP has been designed to be non-invasive and with ease of installation in mind. The components for the system are easily mounted and the harnesses are clearly marked for locations. The GRIP incorporates a plug and play connection method with only one connection needing to be cut and connected into the ignition.

BENEFITS TO A FLEET

The information collected by the system will allow fleet managers and supervisors to observe the idling tendencies for their fleet in order to make educated decisions on program settings in order to further benefit their fleet. All of these adjustments can be made by a fleet supervisor or manager through the programming screen of the GRIP system. The system can also provide insight for how the vehicle is being used and the duty cycles of the vehicles. In many cases the data can help the fleet make decisions of whether certain vehicles are not used enough and therefore reduce the number of vehicles in the fleet.
